Town of McLain Mississippi

Providing Access for All Citizens

About Us

Nestled in southwestern Greene County near the scenic Leaf River, McLain, Mississippi is a small town with a warm heart and a rich history. Established in 1903, McLain grew alongside the expansion of early 20th-century railroads and the thriving lumber industry, shaping the community you see today.

In its early days, McLain served as a stop along several important rail lines, helping connect the region to larger cities and fueling local growth. Even now, you can feel that sense of connection and history woven into the town’s character. A post office has been part of the community since 1902, and the town’s name reflects deep local roots tied to early families and regional history.

What truly makes McLain special is its close-knit community. Residents take pride in their town and have shown remarkable strength in the face of challenges, including major flooding in 2016 and a tornado in 2022. That resilience, combined with genuine Southern hospitality, makes visitors feel right at home.

Set along the western edge of the Leaf River valley, McLain offers a peaceful setting with easy access via U.S. Route 98, connecting travelers to nearby destinations like Hattiesburg and Mobile, Alabama. Whether you’re just passing through or taking time to explore, you’ll find a quiet charm and welcoming spirit that make McLain a memorable stop.
